I fully agree with you that this system is far below Volvo standards. Personally, what I hate the most about this system is that it doesn't allow music playback from a simple USB stick. Also, as an Apple iPhone user, I really miss the CarPlay functionality. If Volvo claims to be a premium brand, they cannot afford to leave that out in my opinion.

To allow iPhone/iPad media, you can attach those as bluetooth devices, and also remember to activate media of these. Now, I’m still not able to start a play list or in my case Podcast from the iPhone. It’ll just flick and stop immediately. However, from the touch screen console you can start your play lists. Very awkward and CarPlay would handle this much better.

Thank you for the informative video. I have been looking at a new Volvo and this system is now a concern. I'm wondering, what happens to the information and maps if you are driving in a rural area where LTE service gets spotty or drops completely and the data is being pulled real time from the Google cloud services? Does your map stop updating? Does music stop playing, etc?

Hi Kristian, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Has the Heads Up Display been de-contented as well? We just test drove a 2022 XC60 T8 Recharge, and noticed the HUD was monochrome white, didn't display cross street names, etc. I thought the prior Sensus HUD was more detailed than that; am I wrong?

I took delivery of our V90 July 30 2021, and as of today I am considering rejecting it as " unfit for purpose", I have exactly the same issues as yourself, plus a few more. I have not found a method to switch on audio to warn of excess speed, and according to Howard at my dealers ( a very efficient master mechanic), they have had very little details given of these problems.
One of my other gripes is that there does not appear to be a way to play media from the USB inputs. I paid a lot of money for the B &W sound system, which is now a complete waste. I could go on--I have a long list of errors, and going backwards in utility and safety. As you say, the vehicle is a delight to drive, but totally let down by this awful electronic system.

I do hope there will be updates to improve my grumbles. The voice recognition is superb, and although there are errors in NAV (centre display disagreeing with HUD) it is very good. I have decided NOT to revert to my old car, which was kindly given as an option by the dealer.
I think if you ordered one now, by the time you receive it, many problems will be resolved. Apparently there will be a four month lead time, since there are still issues with a chip for the bliss system (factory [only one in the world] burned down)

I decided to trade in my 2018 S90 Diesel to a 2021 model demo V90 T8. It is indeed a major step forward in comfort and the T8 drivetrain is fantastic, while still using the Sensus system with USB connection and true high res sound. I would not buy the 2022 model until it brings back USB or provides native support for both TIDAL and Apple Music lossless.
The 2022 XC90 is still an option. From December they’ll make it with the more powerful battery and electric motor, still with the Sensus system. Too bad it was above my budget for now. But super happy with my 2021 V90. Here in Sweden you get the full 2 year warranty on slightly used (

( The * Android system * does feel a bit like Beta for sure ... )
Just Traded in my 2020 xc60 T8 Inscription. Because I wanted the New Extended Range R model. When it came in, a 2022 Polestar Engineered model came in with mine off the truck, and with Extended Range. So they tempted me with a switch as it was not anybody's order. ( a Timing thing they said)
I was told that it was just a more Flashy R-model. ... Well its got Wide Tires & Gold Brakes.
And Wow , NOT the same ride as my Inscription At All. But they said swing by & they would change some olhins Dampener adjusters on the car to make my ride smoother have yet to swing by.
AS for the new * ANDROID AUTO SYSTEM * The jury is still out for me. I have a I-phone so Apple car play is not an option, yet all I can do is play over Bluetooth. Like many have mentioned before there are very Few customization features for the center display screen. (yet ) In fact id say only Half the control Options I had on my 2020 T8 Inscription. The New Android system does feel Beta for sure. The Dealer assured me that Many more Apps & Things are to come as this new Android System has almost unlimited Upgradable potential.
Note: The Google Navigation is way better with my voice. ... My Primary reason for the switch was to get the Extended Range T8.
It Almost double the the full EV Range, & Wow the new Battery & Motor does not disappoint. As for the Polestar Engineered part of the car? its got Massive Gold Brakes behind the rims? and Yes, they stop the Car. ... they are Growing on me. I've been told by multiple Volvo reps now all my concerns re: the Android infotainment System would be fixed in the " NEAR " future. We will see.

Some of them are covered in a lengthy Ars Technica article titled "Android Automotive OS review: Under the hood with Google’s car OS" They talk about the problems/limitations in google maps, and go into detail about the home screen being "useless as anything other than an app launcher." Another quote to highlight: "With Android Automotive, I don't think the point right now is to do a blow-by-blow feature comparison to other infotainment systems out there. Franky, Android Automotive would lose. It's actually a pretty beta-feeling operating system lacking many features. ... Instead, what you get right now is a stable platform that feels like it is built for the future, as opposed to the technological dead-ends that make up most modern car infotainment systems. This is a solid version 1.0 OS..."

After using this system for about 8 months now, my conclusion is that it was/is not ready for production at all. And I honestly have little faith this is going to change in the short term. With each (OTA, if it works) update, only minor issues are resolved and new annoyances are added. It is clear that Volvo is an excellent car manufacturer but has absolutely no knowledge of systems integration and software development.

I hope someone from Volvo Cars watches this video and reads the comments so they realized how much VC missed the mark on the new infotainment system. I've said it before, whoever made the decision to approve including AAOS in the BEVs and MY22 ICE and PHEV vehicles should have their bonus revoked and salary cut for poor judgment.
As many commenters said the AAOS infotainment seems like it was rushed and is incomplete. It certainly has far less functionality than the Sensus system it replaces. VC's AAOS implementation should have stayed in the prototype vehicles a few more years until the software engineers had stabilized and refined AAOS. Instead, VC decided (wrongly) to put out a stripped down infotainment system with fewer features than the system it replaces. That's not progress, it's regression. Ford has publicly stated it will migrate to AAOS in the future, but in its first BEV -- the Mustang Mach e -- it used a revamped version of its Sync 4 infotainment system and not AAOS. VC, on the other hand, decided to put AAOS in its initial BEV -- the XC 40 Recharge -- and owners complain about the lack of infotainment functionality rather than praise the good mechanical aspects of the XC40 Recharge. In addition, for the XC40 Recharge there is no OTA updating (at least not in the North America markets), no satellite radio (despite having the hardware installed), no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (which is not to be confused with the Android Automotive OS). The latest software update, which most owners had installed AT THE DEALER, actually REMOVED features from the vehicle (Pilot Assist steering enable taken off the steering wheel controls and buried in settings, reduced dash screen modes from 3 to 2-- removed auto-centric in favor of the void called calm mode and map mode). The vehicle had so few features already that taking away features makes the vehicle feel more stripped down than when delivered.
No mention of the Volvo Cars app (formerly Volvo on Call app) which is a great disappointment and annoyance. Its an abomination and near close to useless. XC40 owners on the forums complain about how it is takes multiple attempts to connect the VC app with the XC40 Recharge. Then, those that are successful in pairing the app find just 3 basic functions in the app -- lock/unlock, climate and charging. Missing are useful functions like phone-as-a-key, scheduled charging, range, consumption and trip statics found on many competing EV vehicles. An owner with 2 Volvo vehicles -- one equipped with the Sensus infotainment system and one equipped with AAOS -- will have two different experiences using the VC app. The spartan nature of the AAOS vehicle app will be clearly apparent when compared to using the app with the Sensus vehicle. Again, someone at VC needs to be held accountable for such poor decision making.
Kudos to Volvo_Kristian for exposing the half-hearted effort by VC that is its AAOS infotainment system. VC needs to be publicly ridiculed and embarrassed so that it lights a fire under the various engineering teams to quickly rectify the pathetic current state of AAOS-equipped vehicles. VC presented an exciting vision of the next generation of vehicle at this year's Tech Moment. But, will VC leave its 1st generation AAOS vehicles (XC40 Recharge, C40 Recharge and Polestar 2) with inferior infotainment systems. Or, will they step up and quickly update AAOS to a world class system?

I fully agree with everything you said in this video. Got my 2022 XC40 P8 a few weeks ago, changed from 2018 XC40 D3. I immediately became annoyed by not being able to control Pilot assist and speed limiter via the buttons on the steering wheel. The right/left buttons in the left button cluster is not used for anything in my new car. I also have a few things to add. The spotify app immediately pauses if I start spotify on my phone. I can't even have spotify running on the phone at the same time as I play music in the car. And no, it is not due to a license limitation in spotify, it is a bug. It is not uncommon to control spotify in the phone while playing on something else. This worked in my previous car. Now it plays ~1 sec and then pauses. Also, the internet connection is weird. Sometimes the car wants to use internet sharing on the phone instead of the build in mobile connection. No idea why. When this happens most media applications work very poorly. I've also have issues with the phone app. Charging never shows the correct values and most all things controlled by the app is very sluggish. Not impressed.

Awesome video! I was quite bummed out over my XC90 2018 not being able to get the Android update for the system, but after watching this im happy im on Sensus..
One thing that really annoys me with the sensus is that the cluster infront of you only have 4 themes, and the information and space is used very poorly, there is so much room and possibilities, as an example, why does it not have a "Virutal Cockpit" mode as in Audi cars? with the maps taking up almost all of t he cluster and smal dials for speed and revs, or why not integrate a virutal car view as in Tesla cars that shows if the car detects a vehicle infront of you, or with blis / side warning, today its only a small view for cruise control if a car is infront.
Another thing, the 360 camera is great, love it, apart from the car shown has the wrong color, but the parking sensor view is so poorly impelemnted in the 360 view, i hate it, i dont think it needs a change, but for the love of god, why can they not add the car and just sensor view in the CLUSTER display infront of you when the 360 camera is on?
I just feel they fall short on this, and now when i see the Android system i dont know if i should laugh or cry, becouse the state the system is in as shown in this video, is a joke. even more so on a "premium" car.
Volvo needs to fix this, release updates and please their users, thats what will keep them buying Volvo's, ignoring them and just making poor design like this will make people look at other brands.

I would be frustrated by these short comings. I also agree that the 4 tiles on the main screen are not the best way to introduce other functions. They take up too much screen and should be smaller and customisable. It looks like it was thought out by a first year IT student.
Also the limited functions able to be viewed on the dash negates the reason for having a dash in the first place.
Lets see what happens with the new electric car infotainment layouts.

I like the Sensus system in my S90, but that’s mostly because of the B&W sound. To an iOS/Mac user like me, Sensus is tolerable and reasonably designed, but far from what it could be. This Android move is totally in the wrong direction, IMO. This is *exactly* why I would never trade iOS for Android. And a major reason for me to look elsewhere in the future, even if the rest of my S90 is great.
[EDIT OCT 25 2021: I just traded in my S90 for a slightly used 2021 V90 T8. The upgraded B&W system is awesome, ride comfort greatly improved and the T8 power train super smooth. And it still has the Sensus system. I’m happy. For me a new V90 was seriously less attractive because of the Google software and the lack of uncompressed sound, despite the upgraded electric motor and battery. If it had been within my budget I would have bought a new 2022 XC90, which still is made with the Sensus system.]

    • @antonv5488
      @antonv5488 2 года назад

As an Android, Mac and ex-iOS user I think your judgement is a bit unfair. What I'm seeing here is equivalent to my first experience with Android in ~2010 and overall the platform today is very mature and stable, and it's not Android's fault that apps for Auto are written poorly in terms of quality and UX. It also tells me that in 10 years it would be amazing, but not sure I want to pay my money to be a beta tester.

    • @mhsmit
      @mhsmit 2 года назад

@@antonv5488 if the new Google system in these Volvos is an indication, then it shows bad design choices.
Those who developed the Sensus system years ago at least tried to think of where settings should be and while the “3 page swipe left/right” UI takes some getting used to, I find it works very well in a car. I moved my favorite functions (such as Camera) and the CarPlay app into physical positions where I can hit them easily, and moved all the unused ones to the bottom so they are off-screen. The new system of having everything in a text-based vertically-scrolling Settings menu makes much less sense.
There is a reason why settings like “UI theme”, “speed limit warning distance” or “sound and equalizer” were in separate preferences: you only set these once and don’t want to be bothered with them again while driving. To me it made perfect sense that the B&W sound experience settings were NOT combined with the one-time sound controls. And that the Drive Mode setting was a button instead of an option in a menu.
In my opinion, as it stands the ONLY improvement over Sensus is the inclusion of Google Maps. I would have much rather Volvo had stuck with Sensus and replaced the Maps app only.

Been new car shopping for quite a while now, and settled on Volvo because in the segment I'm looking at (Crossover or Compact-SUV), the XC60 was the only Luxury Hybrid with seats and interior geared for comfort. BMW and Audi both seem to think anyone who buys a Crossover sized SUV must want to race it, and thus put these tiny, uncomfortable seats in all the top trim versions (BMW doesn't even offer the X-3 as a hybrid in the US anymore). However, *if* I was buying a midsize SUV I would agree with you completely and purchase a BMW X-5. For those looking at the Crossover segment, Volvo and even Buick (less $ and non-hybrid) are excellent options if you want comfort. Never sat in a Porsche because they don't do a single model with Android Auto, which is pretty sad for a luxury brand like Porsche to lag so far behind the rest of the industry in this regard.

Maps totally worthless. I wasn't able to use the GPS of my phone with Android auto, so I had to use the phone itself for navigation!
Other things, no speedcam warnings anymore. And indeed the speed limit warnings on the dashboard were incorrect. Often a warning for 70 where 110 was allowed or 30 where 50 was allowed. Not able to turn it off.

Cars are to be used for driving and whatever sytems are involved are not to amaze you but be simple and ergonomic. Infontinment toys are cheap for implementation so again, they want us to be focused on them. but there are the other area for development. Great video but I have an XC60 on order and am seeing more reasons to be concerned... And I love new tech 😬 regarding not being able to enter a destination without voice, this is possibly discriminatory (imagine someone with a speech impediment where speech is not possible - can they just not use sat nav now?) Or when you have a baby asleep - crazy decision and I am going to tweet @volvo and @google now to see their suggestion. Regarding the speed sign display - is it using camera recognition still as well as maps input do you think? No drive modes is a worry given I paid extra for the XC60 r design pro version with full air suspension to use comfort mode / softer set up due to a medical need. I really hope Volvo are planning to roll out some heavy updates OTA to enhance this system (and there are updates due this year for things like wireless carplay and wireless Android auto so let's all keep our fingers crossed) as with the chip shortage a new car order at this stage is just not an option! Are there any positives you can pull out about the my22 builds (if you look past the infotainment issues?).

@@badger69badgerRegards to the sat nav I really don't know. Have tried almost everything, or for me everything. Can't find regular typing in letter by letter. Personally I prefer letters. Say when I'm listening to music, or driving with windows, then it's challenging to have to talk with the system.
The speed sign assist. Unsecure what system they are using here. Usually it was camera recognition. But you should seen it on the highway. Constantly back and forward. Doesn't sound like a problem but it's blinking to alert you that your over the speed limit. And that blinking are "visible" for the eye, if you understand me. Even if I look on the road.
Regards to Drive Modes. You still got the Drive Modes in a Plug-In Hybrid, but in Cross Country all are removed. However, both requires changing in the screen menu. And not as before with the separate Drive Mode selector in the centre console

@@volvo_kristian I also agree on typing in destinations - more when not moving. Does the send destination to car from the mobile app still work okay? If it does i'll be trying to use that more until in the car sees some updates. I tweeted at android, VolvoCarsUK and also tagged XDA Developers in (as a huge active android development community. XDA have already retweeted so this might blow up quickly. I linked to your vid so hope that's okay).
The speed sign assist i actually see as a huge safety issue IF you have the speed limiter cruise control active. my 2018 V90 is quite aggressive in applying the brakes in this mode if there is a sudden speed drop on signs and you would really not want to be jumping down to 80kph from 110 all the time on a highway! Not sure if you want to even try this mode if the speed limiter is going to try and apply the brakes suddenly for no actual reason. Maybe its a good thing they moved this option (joke - i hate the fact you cant switch between pilot assist, cruise and limiter from the wheel button - what does that button do now? just enable or disable whatever mode you have pre set in the settings? How do you activate pilot assist as i have this on my ordered car and use all 3 modes a lot on my current one).
My XC60 is a B4 mild hybrid Diesel (not plug in) so i suspect i will have the same limitation. I believe its the top petrol engines that still have drive modes but B4/B5 engines do not (according to another v90 owner who has just returned his car to Volvo due to all the issues and spec changes that were not clear at point of order). I am going to be hugely disappointed if my XC60 'pro' version doesn't have modes in B4 trim as why bother including active air suspension in the pro pack if you cant adjust the ride comfort setting?! Volvo have really messed up with the my22 changes i think and the chip shortage is not helping matters with options being unavailable if what cars do get delivered mostly end up going back to dealers with faults.

@@badger69badger Hello. Great news. I found a function to let me type in letter by letter in the navigation. This function wasn't working last I tried so didn't think that button had a function. Made a little video in my Instagram stories just now. Will make a updated navigation video tomorrow and post here on RUclips.
By the way. This isn't my V90 CC. It's a presscar that I'm lending from Volvo Norway. So I don't have the app connection to this one.
Regards to the buttons. They do nothing now. That's the weird and funny part. The centre activation button will start/stop your previous picked function (in the display). So if you want to change from regular ACC, to speed limiter, or to activate/de activate the steering assist you have to go into the screen.
Haven't seen the Drive Modes in XC60 non hybrids. But have seen a MY22 V90 hybrid. And that still had all the Drive Modes, but operated in the screen. This here are a Cross Country and here all the Drive Modes are removed.

Interesting look back in time. How does the Google or rather Android OS fit you today? Or .. wait .. you sold your Volvo, didn't you? I'm a new Volvo owner. I'm on the latest Android Automotive OS as of today. I know Volvo will release another version tomorrow, 17 July. No changes to the GUI as far as I know though.
Being an Apple iPhone user, and coming from a car without any of these "intelligent features", I'm pretty okay with what Volvo has in their cars today (as of summer 2024). I wish the display acted more like an iPhone though as I like the consistency and quality of Apple thinking better than Google.
The specific touch features of the touch display are laughable compared to the Apple iPad 😄

I think you're being a little OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), I just bought the 2021 CX40 all electric and I love the minimalism of the display, as well as the built in google maps that you can link to your google account. Also, give it time already, they will be updating the software over time and new features and customizability will surely come along.

Good luck! Android automotive at this time isn’t ready for prime time and why you don’t see this shit being run on other cars natively! It’s because of how bad it is currently. It does some things better like natural voice control but the actual controls are far worse!

Is there a saboteur in the Volvo design camp? For a company who pride themselves on safety, they are now doing their utmost to take your eyes off the road. I’m convinced German car manufacturers have placed employees into Volvo design to mess things up 😂. I drive the xc60 Inscription and some things are a tad frustrating - I love the car but some things are just not Volvo 😢.

    Hi Kristian.
I have not liked the Sensus system comparing it to some other car manufacturers. And I thought the Android system would be exactly what Volvo needed. But looking at your video it seems like it's even worse. Not good for a car brand that wants to promote it self as premium.

I just took delivery of an recharge xc40 after having a petrol version before that. Android infotainment system is terrible and if I knew this, I would not have leased the car. The list of issues is way too long - speed limit signs are inaccurate all the time, there are no speed camera warnings which makes no sense because google maps on phones has this. “hey google” recognises my voice well but it’s buggy as hell. If I say “hey google, turn on one pedal drive” it does what I ask and then barks out that “something went wrong, try again”. On the second time I drove the car “hey google” stopped responding altogether and only returned after I rebooted. I’ve still not found how to change the radio station with my voice. It either tries to stream a radio station on an app but since I don’t have a radio streaming app installed it just generates an error message or it plays a radio station that sounds nothing like what I said. Being android based I expected to be able to access the world of apps available on phones but no, there are very very few applications. As for the claim that it’ll be updated - as of early May 2022 the system hasn’t received an update since December 2021 which means they’re not working on it. Usually software is updated regularly. To wait so long is to risk releasing a big update that could go wrong. As for car play, I just don’t believe that claim that “it’ll come later”…they’ve said that for two years! I love the XC40 but this is so poor that anyone thinking about buying this car should avoid until this is fixed…..which I don’t believe it will be.

The Android OS started on the XC40 Recharge and it is a mess. Not ready for general release, missing features, not stable, and so on. There are a few good items, but the issues, bugs, quirks and missing features are a joke and not sure why Volvo rolled this out so prematurely. I have a XC40 Recharge and wife has a XC40 T5 and Sensus is so much better overall.
